FLAT ROCK — The seventh annual Race for Ryan enjoyed another successful outcome Saturday.

Eighty-three runners and about 150 walkers showed up to participate in the memorial event.

Runners went on an eight-kilometer run through Flat Rock. Walkers walked about one mile. Both races began at Flat Rock High School. Walkers started at 5:30 p.m., and runners started at 6.

Registration cost for the run ranged from $13 to $17.

The total amount raised was not available as of press time, but all proceeds will go to the Rams Booster Club to benefit Flat Rock athletic programs.

This year, the booster club had placed a memorial stone in front of Flat Rock High School for Ryan Sergent.

"The booster club should be applauded," said Evelyn Sergent-Kosowski, Ryan's mother. " It was very beautiful what they did."

Ryan Sergent was a cross country runner at Flat Rock High School when he died while practicing for a race on Oct. 9, 1997. His family and friends began the race as a memorial to him and to honor his dedication to helping those in need.

According to Sergent-Kosowski, the run has had unwavering support from dedicated runners and walkers, and has had a steady turnout all seven years.
