FLAT ROCK — About 250 people turned out for Saturday’s
sixth annual Run For Ryan, making for a fun evening and, just as important, a
boost for Flat Rock Community Schools’ athletics budget.
About 100 runners and 145 walkers entered the eight-kilometer
run and one-mile fun run, respectively, raising about $8,000. After the final
runner crossed the line, participants and friends enjoyed a picnic at Flat Rock
Community Fields.
"The run is becoming bigger every year. There will be a
seventh," said Dr. Thomas Clark, an event organizer. "It’s a great
community event and it’s great to see the community come out to support
us."
The race is in honor of Ryan Sergent, a Flat Rock senior who
died unexpectedly in 1997 while training with his cross country teammates.
Since then, friends and family members have been active in
Ryan’s Friends, which organizes the annual race and conducts other
philanthropic activities in the metropolitan Detroit area.
This year’s race sponsors were Ace Sprinkler Co.,
BusinessDuds.com, Carol Bollo and Associates, Community Lutheran Church, Dr.
