FLAT ROCK — Lace up your running shoes and race in memory of another devoted runner.

The fifth annual Run for Ryan is set for Saturday.

The 8K run honors Ryan Sergent, a high school senior who collapsed and died in 1997 while practicing with the Flat Rock Community High School cross country team.

Thomas Clark, who heads up the race along with Sergent’s mother, Evelyn Sergent-Kosowski, said this year is "a big one," being the fifth year.

"This race is a benefit to keep (Ryan’s) memory alive, and it benefits the school’s athletics," Clark said.

All race proceeds go to Flat Rock Community Schools’ athletics and programs.

The race will take place at Flat Rock Community High School, 28100 Aspen.

The registration fee is $14 until Friday and $17 on race day.

    A one-mile run/walk will start the event at 5:30 p.m., with the 8K to follow at 6.

For more information or to register for the run, call the Sergent Chiropractic Clinic at 1-734-782-0717 or stop by City Hall for a registration form.

Or visit the race website at www.heritage.com/ryansfriends for a registration form or information.

Sergent Chiropractic will provide post-race massages for the runners and awards will follow the race at the Flat Rock Community Fields.

Food, refreshments and entertainment will be available after the race for everyone, so bring the whole family.

A Trilogy Band concert, also set to take place at the Flat Rock Community Fields, is open to the public.

In lieu of the Riverfest, an annual event in Flat Rock that is not being held this year due to Telegraph Road construction, the Recreation Department is hosting the concert and will provide a festival-like setup.

The run is a collaborative event between the Flat Rock Ram Boosters and Ryan’s Friends.
