ANN ARBOR: Suspect arrested for Jan. 13 sexual assault in West Quad

A man identified as the suspect of a sexual assault that reportedly occurred Jan. 13 in the West Quadrangle residence hall was arrested Friday evening.

University of Michigan police released surveillance images and video of the suspect last week in an attempt to locate him.

On Saturday, he was released from custody pending further investigation of the case, according to an update of the university police crime alert.

A student told police she was sexually assaulted by an unknown man she met at a party off campus, according to the crime alert.

He walked her to her residence sometime around 12:45-1:30 a.m. Jan. 13 and reportedly assaulted her in a lower-level common area of the residence hall, according to police.

Anyone with further information about the case can call university police at 734-763-1131.

There are some steps police advise to prioritize personal safety and reduce the risk of attack by a stranger. Students should be aware of their surroundings and trust their intuitions to choose alternatives if a particular situations makes them feel uncomfortable or unsafe, according to the crime alert.

Police also suggest walking with a friend or coworker in well-lit areas, keeping rooms locked at all times, and utilizing campus transportation services.

Police advise any students who feel threatened to call 911 on any phone or look for blue-light emergency phones on campus.
