YPSILANTI: EMU President Susan Martin to receive award at Women and Leadership in Workplace Conference

Susan Martin, the first female president at Eastern Michigan University, will receive a Distinguished Leadership Award at the 16th annual Women and Leadership in the Workplace Conference.

Martin, whose award is in the education category, will be among 11 honorees at the event, to be held the morning of Thursday, Jan. 26 at The Henry Hotel in Dearborn. The conference honors women who have demonstrated successful leadership in workplaces and communities of Michigan.

The program is a joint venture of the Michigan Business & Professional Association and an advisory committee of leading businesswomen and community leaders.

The mission of the annual conference is to promote high professional standards, encourage leadership, provide education and assure equal advantages for women who have demonstrated excellence in their professions, place of employment, and volunteerism.

The conference offers women business leaders of today and tomorrow a day of celebration, informative workshops, keynotes and facilitated networking opportunities, with a focus on education and inspiration.

Martin joined Eastern as its 22nd president and first woman president in July 2008. Prior to Eastern Michigan, Martin served as provost and vice-chancellor of academic affairs at the University of Michigan-Dearborn from 2006-08. She enjoyed an 18-year career at Grand Valley State University in a variety of academic and administrative leadership positions.

Martin has served the state of Michigan as assistant auditor general; deputy state treasurer for the Bureau of Local Government Services for Michigan; commissioner of revenue; chair of the Michigan State Hospital Finance Authority; and ex-officio representative for Gov. Granholm on The Detroit Medical Center Financial Emergency Task Force.

She received her Ph.D. in business/accounting and MBA from Michigan State University, and earned a bachelor’s degree from Central Michigan University. She is married to Dr. Larry Martin, professor of economics at Michigan State, and has three children and three grandchildren.
