Dexter's Jazwinski turns her attention to track and field
Dexter’s Katie Jazwinski doesn’t have a problem with Houston, she just isn’t heading down there this weekend.
Jazwinski, the outstanding distance runner and Dexter High School cross country coach, did qualify for the Jan. 14 Olympic Marathon Trials in Houston on Jan. 14 but has decided not to run.
Instead, Jazwinski is going to focus on training for the track and field Olympic Trials in the steeplechase coming up in June. She feels that she has a more realistic chance of qualifying for the US team in this event.
“The woman in the marathon are running incredibly fast this year and Katie would be lucky to be one of the top three Michigan woman let alone top three in the US,” said Bob Jazwinski, her husband. “It would be a great experience to go but we would have to be taking off a number of days from teaching, and running the marathon would set her training for the track back quite a few weeks.”
Katie is excited to be training for the Olympic Trials and pursuing a spot on the US team.
“While this is a long shot, she is very focused on making the team,” Bob said. “Her goal first started out to qualify for the trials in the marathon. Once she did that she realized that she actually would like to have a better shot than one in a million. She has now refocused her energy to qualify for the steeple with the assistance and consultation of Jerry Baltes.”
Katie will be chasing a dream of a lifetime.
“She hopes that her motivation and desire continue to last,” Bob said. “Katie never thought she would run on the track again but has a rekindled fire to get her back in action. It sure is fun talking about all of this stuff again after about 10 years out of competition.”
Katie will be running in a number of indoor and outdoor track meets throughout the Midwest to try and attain a qualifying mark. She will then hopefully be going out to Eugene, Ore., in late June to capture her dream.
