ANN ARBOR: SCHOOLS: Logan Elementary students give the gift of pajamas to kids at The SafeHouse Center (video)
These pajamas and books, collected by the Logan Elementary School community, have been donated to The SafeHouse Center and will be given to local children who need them.
Not every child will sleep in their bed, or in a place they call home, this Christmas season.
But thanks to the generous spirits of the students at Logan Elementary School, on Ann Arbor’s north side, more than 200 in-need children Washtenaw County children will have a comfortable pair pajamas waiting for them when their families are forced to flee to The SafeHouse Center, an Ann Arbor domestic violence shelter.

The school celebrated the accomplishment by wearing pajamas all day long — students, teachers, and even principal Terra Webster. At 2:30 the students gathered into the Logan cafeteria for an all-school assembly. On the way in they were given Oreo Cookies and little milk boxes.
Superintendent Patricia Green came out for the assembly and read a children’s book, “Pajamas Anytime,” for the school. Green also donated two sets of pajamas, both for girls. At the end of Green’s reading, Logan 2nd grade teacher Kristi Whitaker-Krile presented the superintendent with a personal copy of “Pajamas Anytime,” which Green said she will keep in her office.
The SafeHouse Center serves some 5,000 people, mostly women, every year, said Julaine LeDuc, director of resource development. Many of the women bring children, and some of them bring multiple children, to the domestic violence shelter. “Hundreds” of children come through its doors or rely on its services annually, LeDuc said.
This was the second year of the pajama drive, said Webster. Last year, some 147 pairs were collected. This year the goal was to more than double last year’s contribution and bring in 350 pairs of PJs. That didn’t happen, but as a result of the community’s generosity, 238 children who come to SafeHouse over the next year will have a comfort of home that they otherwise wouldn’t have had.
Scholastic Book Clubs stepped up to match a book with each pair of pajamas. The whole reason Logan got involved in the pajama drive last year is because Krile noticed that it would match each pair of pajamas with a book, Webster said.
Krile admits that the goal of 350 PJs might have been set a little high this year, but she’s still looking for growth. Next year’s goal: 300 pair. Continued...
