YPSILANTI: City to raise water, sewer rates
Effective Sept. 1, both water and sewer rates will increase for customers living within the city of Ypsilanti.
The Ypsilanti City Council unanimously approved the first reading of ordinances to raise water rates by 7 percent and the sewer rate by 3.5 percent. However the surcharge rate will decrease 3 percent.
The combined effect of the adjustments would be a 3.4 percent increase on a customer's bi-monthly bill.
Larry Thomas, director of the Ypsilanti Community Authority Board of Commissioners, said an average customer that uses 16 units of water per month would receive an increase of about $2.25 per month.
The new rates put the city at one of the highest rates of surrounding areas, with Superior Township paying the most at $30.35 for water and $29.55 for sewer per month for a customer using 5 gallons.
The adjustments were recommended by the YCUA Board of Commissioners.
No one spoke during the public hearing.
